Lyon is the second-largest French metropolitan area after Paris, and as we had not visited in several years, we decided to spend a couple of days there at the end of April 2015. Two rivers come together in Lyon: the Rhône and the Saône. We usually stay on the peninsula, the portion that lies between the two rivers, and we spend most of our time there and in the old town and the Fourvière section, both located on the right bank of the Saône, the westernmost part of the city. On the left bank of the Rhône, in the eastern part of town, there are mostly newer residential sections or business districts, so it is not as interesting to us. One notable exception is the Parc de la Tête d'Or, a truly beautiful leisure area that includes a lake and a zoo.

We had planned to visit the park on May 1, our last day in Lyon, but whereas the weather had been very nice on April 29 and 30, it was supposed to rain all day on May 1, so we chose to take an earlier train home. Consequently, I decided to include some photos of a previous visit to Lyon on this page. Since this is confession time, I may as well admit that the photos taken from the top of the Fourvière basilica were not taken during this visit, either: it was just a little too hazy for that sort of thing. However, this should certainly not detract from your virtual visit. We hope you enjoy beautiful Lyon!
