VRM (Voltage Regulator Module)

This is the voltage regulator module in my Power Macintosh G3 266/DT. It works perfectly well with my Newer Tech MAXPowr G4 500 MHz ZIF CPU upgrade. I contacted Newer Tech prior to purchasing the upgrade because of statements made in a MacWorld article to the effect that certain VRMs were not able to correctly supply faster processors with an appropriate amount of current. The VRM shown below was identified by Newer Tech as being one of "Apple's own" (whateverthat means) and it was considered "super safe."

Nevertheless, the MacWorld story does not appear to be a hoax. Newer Tech's CPU upgrade comes with a sheet showing four different VRMs; of these, one is said not to be compatible with G4 upgrades. Click on the small picture of Newer's warning below to see the larger version (approximately 100K).
