This quiet (in the winter) and bustling (in the summer) little town has become famous the world over as a favorite meeting point of the jet set, the St. Moritz of the summer season, as it were. Located on the south side of one of the Côte d'Azur's most beautiful bays, St-Tropez was all but ignored by tourists at the turn of the century. It was the painters, starting with Paul Signac, and then the writers who made St-Tropez famous. When the place turned into a hangout of show business celebrities (and their following) during the 50s, it became known internationally.
